Blu-ray logoCan I play both DVD and Blu-ray on my PS3?
Yes.

What picture quality can the PS3 support?
The PS3 is able to output in HD resolutions ranging from 720p and 1080i right through to 1080p.

What do I need to get high definition gaming with the PS3?
High definition (HD) gaming using the PS3 requires connection to your HD-Ready TV using an HDMI cable, rather than the standard cable that would have been using with your old standard definition TV. However, if you haven't yet upgraded your TV to a HD-Ready model, PS3 still enables connection via the standard cable. NB. Picture and sound quality will not be as impressive as with a HD-Ready TV.

Why is Blu-ray beneficial for the PS3?
With Blu-ray, game creators can create amazing imagery and game engines, and for the first time bring high definition quality to gaming.

Will PlayStation 3 games be in high definition?
Yes.

What does 7.1 surround sound actually mean?
7.1 surround means that there are enough channels to plug in 7 speakers and 1 subwoofer.

Will I automatically get 7.1 surround sound through my TV when I play a Blu-ray disc?
No, you will need to have the correct speaker system to get the full experience.

What do I need to get this sound?
To get the most of 7.1 surround sound, you should have 2 x front speakers, 2 x surround speakers, 2 x rear speakers, 1 x centre speaker and 1 x subwoofer.

Will my Blu-ray discs work properly if I don't have this?
Yes, you can still watch your Blu-ray discs in high definition, although you won't get the benefit of 7.1 surround sound without the correct speakers.

What is firmware?
Just as computers require software to run, a Blu-ray player requires firmware to run. Firmware is a type of computer program that lives inside the hardware and makes it possible to play movies and access other features.

What is the purpose of firmware?
If you experience a problem with your hardware, either a player or some other device, the first thing you should do is to make sure that you have the most current firmware installed. If not, then it's very likely that a firmware update will solve your problem.

What about hardware problems?
The great thing about firmware is that it can be easily updated, so even though a Blu-ray player might not support a feature when it is released that feature might be added later as long as the hardware can support it. Firmware updates can also fix problems with existing features and offer other improvements.

What are the limitations of firmware?
Unfortunately some features can't be added with a firmware update because they also require a hardware upgrade, but as long as the current hardware can support the new features, all that is needed is a firmware update.

How do I update my firmware?
Firmware can be updated by accessing the supplier of your player / PS3's website, searching & then downloading the relevant update and installing it on your Blu-ray player or PS3.
